English Language Test Preparation
For all non-English speakers, it is necessary for them to prove their English language proficiency to study, work and live in an English-speaking country. Professional associations in Australia would also require proficiency in English language for the registration and skill assessment for migration purpose.
The TOEFL test is the most widely accepted English-language test in most of the countries including Australia, United States of America, Canada, New Zealand and United Kingdom, which is recognized by more than 11,000 colleges, universities and institutions in more than 150 countries. TOEFL iBT test is internet based and is offered in different locations around the world including Nepal. The cost of the test in Nepal is US $180 and in Australia, it is US $300. There are four sections (listening, reading, speaking and writing) which takes a total of about three and a half hours to complete.

Total score of iBT TOEFL test is 120 and each section comprise of 30 marks. TOEFL scores are valid for two years after the test date and there is no limit to the number of times you can take the test. You can view your scores online in your TOEFL iBT account approximately 6 days after your test date and PDF score reports are ready to download after 8 days of your test date. IELTS is a well-known English test that is recognised by more than 10,000 institutions in over 135 countries. IELTS tests are held in over 500 centres all around the world with tests up to four times a month. There are 2 test formats in IELTS i.e. Academic and General training. Generally, IELTS Academic test is for those who want to study higher education in English speaking countries and IELTS General test is for those who want to go to English speaking countries to work, training purpose or migration purposes. However, it depends on individual’s requirement whether to sit for General or Academic test. IELTS can be paper based or computer based.
Test format
IELTS tests consist of four sections – listening, reading, writing and speaking. The Speaking test is a face-to-face interview with a certified Examiner. Listening and speaking components of both Academic and General training are the same with different subject matters. Only reading and writing tests are different. Although the test can be taken on paper or computer, speaking section is carried on face-to-face. The reading, writing and writing sections are completed on the same day without any break in between. However, speaking section can be completed a week before or after the actual test date.

The cost of IELTS test in Nepal is NPR 21,500 and in Australia, it is AUD 355. You will be able to see your test result online after 13 days of the test date if you have taken paper-based test and after 5-7 days of the test date if you have taken computer-based test. The SAT is a globally recognized college admission test in the United States that tests your knowledge of reading, writing and math. It’s taken by more than two million students every year and is accepted by virtually all colleges and universities. Almost all colleges and universities in the US use the SAT to make admission decisions. The SAT also provides a gateway for scholarship opportunities. The SAT is made up of 3 main sections to be completed in 3 hours with optional 50 minutes essay.

GRE is a standard test required for admissions in many graduate schools in the United States of America and other English-speaking countries. This is the general test for students applying for master’s and PhD studies in fields other than management or MBA. GRE exam aims to measure verbal and quantitative reasoning, analytical writing and critical thinking skills that are important for all and not related to any specific area of study. The GRE General Test is computer-based, and the standard cost is USD 205 in Nepal and USD 230 in Australia.
The overall testing time is about three hours and 45 minutes and there are six sections with a 10-minute break following the third section.

The GMAT is a computer-adaptive standardized test in English language for measuring aptitude to succeed academically in graduate business studies. Business schools use the test as a criterion for admission into graduate business administration programs (e.g. MBA, Master of Accountancy, etc.) throughout the world. The GMAT consists of four parts – Analytical Writing Assessment, integrated reasoning, Quantitative and Verbal. Total testing time is under 3 hours and half to complete including 2 optional 8 minutes breaks. The fee to take GMAT is USD 250 worldwide.
